1. Partnerships for Success College Access and Success Grants
$500 - $1,000 Awards
GENERAL INFORMATION
Partnerships for Success was recently awarded funding from the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, Lumina, KnowHow2Go, USA Funds, and Campus Compact to build and maintain effective PK-16 partnerships and dual enrollment programs that increase achievement and aspirations of middle and high school students in Rhode Island. Up to 20 programs will be awarded a $500-$1,000 grant to form or expand a school-college partnership that has a focus on college access or readiness. The purpose of the grants are to encourage greater collaboration between PK-12 and higher education, increase college access and readiness for Rhode Island students, support educational agencies starting/maintaining dual enrollment related partnerships, create incentives to utilize the PFS website and enhance the effectiveness and impact of PK-16 partnerships. Selected projects will help Partnerships for Success promote best practices, create a network of educators that support college access and success and enhance student success in Rhode Island.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND PROJECT CRITERIA
Awards will go to a PK-12 partnership that will impact at least 20 middle and/or high school students. All applicants must show a direct connection to a K-12 school and higher education institution in Rhode Island. A community/youth-based organization may be involved in the project but a school or college must be the lead applicant. Projects must commit to entering their partnership to the PFS database as well as submitting a final report that will be posted on the PFS website. Funds can only be used for direct expenses that are incurred for the project.
APPLICATION PROCESS AND IMPORTANT DATES
To apply, please complete the application (type directly into form) located on the Rhode Island Campus Compact website by email or fax. Please provide sufficient information to enable the Partnerships for Success Selection Committee to have a clear understanding of your project and how it directly connects to college access or readiness/success. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed at the end of each month beginning April 29th and ending on September 30th, 2011. Grants will be awarded on a monthly basis until all grant funds have been distributed. The grantee and their partner(s) will be encouraged to attend at least one Campus Compact/PFS event (TBA) and submit a final report after the project is completed. Address questions to Carie Hertzberg at 401-427-6957 or chertzbe@risd.edu.
2. Summer Dual Enrollment Opportunity
The Office of Higher Education offered Dual Enrollment Scholarships for a select number of high school students (juniors and seniors for the 2011-2012 school year) to attend one college course at Rhode Island College or the Community College of Rhode Island. Approximately 60 students completed the program during Summer Session II at RIC and CCRI.
Dual Enrollment Scholarships are for Rhode Island students who want to a) experience a college course before they graduate from high school, b) enroll in more advanced coursework than offered at their high school, c) want to prepare for college ahead of time, or d) experiment with a new subject. This scholarship pays tuition and fees as well as all required textbooks.
It is expected the scholarship will be available next year.
