The Rhode Island College (RIC), Feinstein School of Education and Human Development(FSEHD), Office of Community Service Learning, is collaborating with Mt. Pleasant High School’s Right Track Tutoring Program to help students succeed in math. The Right Track Tutoring Program has become so popular with Mt. Pleasant students that it has outgrown the original number of classes. Coordinated by Melissa Lipa, Teacher Leader Guidance, Right Track currently has seven classes; three math and three English/literature. Each Right Track classroom is staffed by one to two teachers.
RIC FSEHD teacher candidates along with Math/Computer Science majors are being recruited (beginning in January 2012) by the Office of Community Service Learning to serve as volunteer tutors in one of the three math classes: 1) Ramp Up to Algebra 2) Algebra 3) Geometry, Algebra II, and Calculus. College volunteers commit to tutoring every Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:30 for a minimum of five weeks. This collaboration fosters unity between the campus and its neighboring high school, provides an opportunity for college students to apply their knowledge and skills in a school/community based setting, and helps the devoted Mt. Pleasant students improve and succeed.
